Facebook Playing the Cupid's Role
It's not about friends and family solely anymore.

In Facebook's annual developer conference 2018, Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO) announced clearly that they will be launching a new feature within 2018 called "DATING".
It was totally a surprise. Who saw that coming!?

This dating feature will be integrated into the Facebook app for the purpose of building real, long-term relationships — not just for hookups according to Zuckerberg's speech at F8.

Although many relationships and marriages have already taken place through Facebook, however, the Facebook company wants to enhance this experience by introducing a straightforward method.

Moreover, you don't need to worry about privacy or create a new Facebook account because the dating profile is created separately from your existing Facebook profile.
Also, Facebook friends won't be able to see your dating profile (You cannot be dating your Facebook friends).

Here is a short video of CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing the New Facebook Dating Feature.

How It Works?

  1. Create your dating profile with just your first name or Nickname you choose. You can share your photo, location, study, and work to the dating profile.
  2. You will get dating suggestions based on mutual interests and friends, in addition to other data that Facebook have about you from your existing Facebook profile.
  3. Within the dating platform, you can browse Events in your city and Groups that match your interests. You can select to “unlock” one for dating. You’ll then see the profiles of other dating users who’ve unlocked that event.
  4. You can browse through people’s profiles that show off a few of their photos plus some basic information about them.
  5. If you both are interested in each other, you’ll be able to start a conversation in a special inbox that’s separate from Messenger and WhatsApp. For safety, only text can be sent for now.

Conclusion

Facebook's main goal is to make people spending as much time as possible by providing various services and features that accommodate all interests.
In line with this goal, Facebook has been copying and utilizing unique features exist in other companies, and integrated them into its platform or one of its products.

Examples of this strategy:
  • Marketplace – which lets people browse items for sale nearby. (Origin: Craigslist and eBay)
  • Job Postings – which let Businesses post jobs, and job seekers apply for jobs, all through Facebook directly. (Origin: LinkedIn)
  • Story – which is a fun way to keep up with friends by uploading a short user-generated photo or video collections. (Origin: Snapchat)
